Le film d'oxyde \u00e0 la surface de l'alliage est dense et peut \u00eatre bien mouill\u00e9 par le verre. Il ne r\u00e9agit pas avec le mercure, ce qui permet de l'utiliser dans des instruments contenant des d\u00e9charges de mercure. Il s'agit d'un mat\u00e9riau d'\u00e9tanch\u00e9it\u00e9 primaire pour les appareils \u00e9lectroniques \u00e0 vide.
